to
Local Universities and
Technology Companies
PITTSBURGH, PA (January 7, 2004)
-- The Pittsburgh Digital Greenhouse announced today its latest
round of research funding in areas related to the use of
system-on-a-chip (SoC) technology in the digital multimedia and
networking markets. In total, $1.5 million will be allocated to
ten projects at Pennsylvania universities and local technology
firms.
"The response to our Research program continues to grow, which
has made the proposal review process extremely competitive,"
said David Ruppersberger, president and CEO of the Digital
Greenhouse. "Our goal is to continue funding projects that
present the best opportunities for commercialization, and
support the economic stability and job creation potential for
this industry in southwestern Pennsylvania."
The awards for this round of funding were granted to Carnegie
Mellon University, Pennsylvania State University, Xactix,
and Accipiter Systems. Including this round, the Digital
Greenhouse has funded 74 projects totaling $12.9 million.
The Greenhouse received 37 proposals for this round, which
represents one of the largest responses to date. Each proposal
submitted was required to include a 25% cost share. A total of
285 proposals have been submitted to the research program since
late 1999.
The research program is a key building block for the Digital
Greenhouse, which seeks to fund projects that build on and
extend southwestern Pennsylvania’s core technology competencies
in areas of interest to its member firms. The program provides
development funds, expertise, and project management to
facilitate breakthroughs in advanced SoC chip designs and
applications.
